Chop Shop | Sooo close

But so far away…

EDIT P1070482

So I started assembling the windshield… when I hit my first bump… The rivet gun head didn’t fit into the extrusion…

EDIT P1070486

Much better.

EDIT P1070487

Seal riveted in.

EDIT P1070491

Sigh… new windshield… finally

EDIT P1070495

Tops & Bottom in after several attempts.

EDIT P1070497

It’s on… but it’s still not fitting perfectly… I think I’m going to take it apart tonight.

Chop Shop | Just in…

Just got this pic from Don… Look at how small it is next to the xB!…

Less than a ton + 400whp = danger

Chop Shop | Born to be wild

Last day of work before it heads out to get the cage TIG welded.

EDIT P1070453

but it’s looking pretty bad ass no? (I didn’t do anything on the cage)

EDIT P1070457

Cage to shock tower.

EDIT P1070459

Tracing out the cover plate.

EDIT P1070464

EDIT P1070463

That tool is on the bench beside that fingy…

EDIT P1070470

Side view…

EDIT P1070472

I think my old sprite windshield is going to fit perfectly!

EDIT P1070478

Everyone’s question is whether the cage is strong enough or not…. 1 1/4″ chromoly…

EDIT P1070480

View from the cockpit.

Chop Shop | Not satisfied

The windshield frame was shiny… yes… but the reflection was still not there. The harsh brushing to remove the oxidized coating left marring on the aluminum. So I started sanding for the last time with 2000 grit.

EDIT P1070410

See those scratches… not cool

EDIT P1070415

Quite a few passes later…

EDIT P1070426

See the difference?

EDIT P1070420

The marred surface refracts the light.

EDIT P1070402

I almost forgot!… i’m starting the steering wheel cover as well.

EDIT P1070430

So today I finally finish the frame.

EDIT P1070440

All the pieces are laid out!.

EDIT P1070443

Oh yeah… I got the parts I ordered.

EDIT P1070445

Test fit!

Look du Jour | Friday

I know it’s been a while…

EDIT P1070401

June 23rd, 2010

Chop Shop | Done with the windshield for now.

Well almost… There are a couple of spots left…

EDIT P1070386

Final section that needed sanding.

EDIT P1070387

See that garage door opener?… I wasn’t satisfied with that reflection… so I kept on wet sanding…

EDIT P1070392

Finished that section and got started on the fun stuff!

EDIT P1070398

Patterning with blue tape… I can’t wait to make the real one.

June 21st, 2010

Chop Shop | I’m getting buff.(ing)

Seriously… I’m getting my work out from this shit.

EDIT P1070358

Passenger side convertible latch… check.

EDIT P1070359

Driver’s side convertible latch… check… this image is a good prelude to this.

EDIT P1070362

those marks are from where the convertible locator tabs missed the latch.

EDIT P1070365

First like… 400 passes.

EDIT P1070376

Can you pick out where those dents were?

EDIT P1070375

Not bad eh? Almost there… just the other side… wet sand the entire surface… steel wool…. 2000 grit wet sand…. Polish… buff… then wax.

EDIT P1070379

While I was on the phone… I took apart the steering wheel cover.

EDIT P1070385

It was filthy…. but it’s all clean now… stay tuned for the steering wheel… I have good plans for it.

June 20th, 2010

Chop Shop | Almost there…

I finally finished the bottom portion of the windshield frame…

EDIT P1070328

The rivets were loose… I had to chisel the heads off because the drill bit was just spinning them.

EDIT P1070330

The scratching…

EDIT P1070332

and the pitting… took forever to take out.

EDIT P1070334

But what a difference…

EDIT P1070336

Onto the top portion of the frame… and it doesn’t look too promising.

EDIT P1070337

The rivets on the rear view mirror mount and convertible top clips were super rusted… but they were original ones which I couldn’t get my hands on… I didn’t want to use conventional rivets because they were so visible… and I also question their strength.

EDIT P1070356

There’s one of them done… not too bad eh?

June 20th, 2010

Chop Shop | Back at it.

After two weeks off working… I hit the restart button.

EDIT P1070281

I ordered parts today… so I definitely have to get ready for the new windshield.

EDIT P1070283

So I started with the other A pillar… as it was pretty pitted.

EDIT P1070287

Almost gone…

EDIT P1070304

Almost a reflection.

EDIT P1070309

There ya go.

EDIT P1070312

done… now for the base.

EDIT P1070314

it was super pitted.

EDIT P1070321

after a scrub down + 0000 steel wool + 2000 grit + polish…

EDIT P1070322

EDIT P1070326

There she is.

June 18th, 2010

Chop Shop | Dune buggy day 3

EDIT P1070263

So… Back to work on this thing… Cleaning up the rear… I need a saws-all

EDIT P1070268

Don… bending the strut tower bar.

EDIT P1070270

Tube bender on an engine stand… sweet.

EDIT P1070271

Shock tower reinforcements…

EDIT P1070274

Sound deadening material off… everything cleaned up.

EDIT P1070276

Test fitting the tower bar.

EDIT P1070277

That is the current state of the body… not bad eh?
