MIA

Damn…I’ve been off the grid for too long.
This post will be an attempt to summarize the tail end of 2012.
More importantly… give you an idea of what’s to come.

Let’s pick up where I left off, in Pemby.

EDIT DSC_0921

A typical grocery run/walk into town.

EDIT DSC_0434

When I first moved in and walked into the garage, these were the first things that caught my eye.
I quickly learned that skiing/snowboarding, & mtb (activities that were very foreign to me) was life here…The question is… what the hell was I doing in BC anyways?
Well an old friend and classmate Shane, hooked up a helper monkey position @ FYi.

EDIT DSC_0943

FYi is a vertical design firm on the forefront of technical apparel.

EDIT DSC_1444

From design, to patterning, to prototyping solutions… everything was done in house. I was fortunate enough to learn from the greats.

EDIT DSC_1562

But those 2 months just blitzed by.

EDIT DSC_1617

and I was on the road again.

EDIT Travel Map 2012

This time across the US of A.

EDIT DSC_1627

First stop… Seattle to visit Javor! I haven’t seen her since ’05 i think.

EDIT DSC_1688

Then to Matt & Mandy’s place in Portland.

EDIT DSC_1728

After catching up with Matt, I was back on the road and beelined it to Utah where I got some needed rest.

EDIT DSC_1777

As the next couple of days were packed with a few national park explorations. Bryce National Park.

EDIT DSC_1829

Zion National Park… Yes it just keeps getting bigger and better.

EDIT DSC_1876

Grand Canyon North Rim… all three parks left me speechless.

EDIT DSC_1977

Forgot to mention the entire trip I was nursing downhill mtb injuries… So after the Grand Canyon.. I made every effort to get back home quick… Fresh scabs + unrelenting heat = not good… Finally made it to my cousins new home in Michigan!

EDIT DSC_2490

Literally a week after I got home… there was record rainfall in Toronto and surrounding areas…
With my luck… I hydrolocked my motor two blocks away from my home… Two cross country treks with no problem… a small pond that formed on a side street…I had to pull the motor and tranny.

Chop Shop | That’s a wrap

With the pattern cut… I have to note… I made a rookie mistake when calculating the circumference… You have to take the stretch of the material into account…. what I did to remedy this was to make two breaks in the pattern… which in the end turned out to be quite functional.

With a bit of a fight… it fit… I was surprised.

Oh yes… One thing I forgot to mention on the last post was how I marked the wheel as I removed the stock cover… This helps align the new pattern piece.

Starting to stitch it together.

So far so good…

Voila.

Spoke detail.

QC this ish.

The bottom spoke wasn’t too bad.

The stitch consistency varied a bit as I set the tension low on the sewing machine… The next one I do will be tighter.

Chop Shop | Carb cleaning part 2

The garage is filled with an aromatic mixture of gas and carb cleaner.

Measuring the gas float bowls to make new seals.

Time to cut.

One down…

Cleaning the linkage up.  I have no clue why it was painted.

Second carb apart.

The buildup of crap on this one wasn’t as bad inside.

This is my newest contraption.  Great protection from splashback.

Chop Shop | Weekend update.

So this weekend was productive to say the least.  Friday night, the glass went back into the driver’s side door, and I started stripping the valve cover.

Just getting the window to fit and test rolling it.

I noticed the ding on the valve cover when I took it off, looked at it and said “might as well”.

So I tapped it out.

Saturday was Fab day.

Radiator shroud done, time for the battery box.

Here’s a shot of the new glass.

The battery box was a challenge, it had to be smooth on the bottom, and mount to the body without drilling new holes for fasteners.

Placing the template onto the scrap aluminum.

All marked up.  ready to cut.

Yes, I occasionally cut aluminum on a table saw.

All bent up.  Time for a test fit.

Prepping for an angled cut.

Zing!

Done and done!… I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

That was how it all fitted in.

Exhaust manifold and carbs out…  I was talking to Don about how poorly the motor was designed. Seriously, 3 exhaust ports for a 4 cylinder car?  On top of that, you put the intake and exhaust ports on the same side.

Moving on.  I grinded all the rust off of the headers and resprayed it.

Headers back in.

I’m not too sure how the rad got so banged up.

Putting all the bits and pieces in on the valence.

And… We’re in!  Still have a bit of tweaking to do, but I’m pretty happy with the results.

It’s going to be a rainy week.  Perfect for a carb rebuild session.

Chop Shop | Dash woes

So I commited to stripping the dash…  I relabeled everything and went to town.

EDIT P1050393

I don’t know what was more difficult… the chips in the paint… or spraying autostripper on it.

EDIT P1050398

Yeah… spraying that autostripper on the dash was like keying your own car….

EDIT P1050401

Painful to look at right?

EDIT P1050403

Not as bad as this… the first coat didn’t take too much off… I was really worried.

EDIT P1050436

See what I mean… not good…

EDIT P1050439

Laid down a coat of stronger stuff… it’s looking better… but it was 3am… time to wrap it up.

EDIT P1050445

Time… to… sleep.
